Smart Taipei Brand Identity
Smart Taipei is a city transformation program that turns the city into a testing ground for innovation. But amidst the rise of smart cities worldwide, Taipei was originally left out of the spotlight. Despite being one of the most technically integrated IoT cities in the world backed by Taiwan’s world-class hi-tech industry, Taipei remained unrecognized by global audiences. The root of the problem? People didn’t know the merits or benefit of Smart Taipei. To build awareness, Smart Taipei needed communication tools and a visual identity system to embody and showcase the technological, welcoming, and vibrant spirit of Smart Taipei.
Our approach
We proposed a new name (from Taipei Smart City to Smart Taipei), to help differentiate from other smart cities worldwide, make the name easier to read, and to dovetail with our design. Our team aimed to build a logo and visual system that would visualize the essence of Smart Taipei’s unique open-platform program. This concept is rooted in our logo design, where the two “t’s” from “Smart” and “Taipei” connect to form the Chinese character for Taipei (北). In digital applications, the character “opens” (separating “Smart” and “Taipei”) like a door to symbolize a welcoming attitude, while the space between implies endless possibilities. The visual system’s dynamic and vibrant identity reflects the diverse aspects of smart living in Taipei. The brand design presents the city as an epicenter for pioneering ideas, where possibilities take shape and grow.
